So you’ve decided it’s time to call it quits on your self-managed super fund. Here’s a checklist of everything you need to do to wind up your SMSF:

  • Have you had a look at what the trust deed says about winding up the fund?
  • Have you ensured there’s enough funds in the SMSF to pay any final tax or expense obligations, prior to withdrawing/ rolling over your super?
  • Has an approved SMSF auditor completed the final audit?
  • Have you and your accountant completed and lodged the SMSF’s last annual tax return, and importantly, deregistered all the relevant entities?
  • Do you need to lodge a transfer balance account report?
  • Has all the outstanding tax been paid?
  • Have you rolled over/withdrawn any tax refunds? You need to do this as soon as you receive the refund.
  • And finally, once the ATO have confirmed that the fund’s ABN is cancelled, have you closed the fund’s bank account?
